Pros:
Handles drives well defensively
Loves getting to the mid range; uses post jumpers, P&R jumpers, and stepbacks to get to that spot; great non-rim 2 point scorer
Attacks defenses at all levels well coming off screens
Great frame with very long arms
Comfortable having a defender on his hips on drives
Good rebounder
Smart decision-maker that doesn’t panic vs traps and runs a good P&R
Areas for improvement:
Needs to get to the line more to take the next step as a scorer
Struggles to consistently fight through and defend screens properly (Tennessee game)
Doesn’t have a consistent release on jumpers; elbow can flare out too easily
Must get stronger to finish more at the rim
Swing Skills:
Is he a true point guard?
Mediocre athleticism
Summary:
Trey Alexander is a productive guard from Creighton who has potential to be a two-way guard and offer solid depth off the bench.
Defensively, while he has good length and footspeed to stay in front of slashers, his pick and roll defense is his biggest pitfall. With both a lack of great strength and footwork around screens, Alexander can easily be removed from plays via the pick & roll. His current defense takes him longer routes than necessary, often keeping him too far removed from the play. In the NCAA Tournament loss to Tennessee, this was especially apparent as they hunted him all game, which makes teams skeptical of him becoming a positive team defender any time soon.
Offensively, the 3 point shot is the glaring swing skill. He has good touch on his shot, evidenced by all three years at school boasting a free throw percentage north of 80%. Last year’s 41% from 3 may have been an anomaly, juxtaposed with a 28% year from 3 and 34% year from 3, but the hope is that he can grow into a successful shooter. While his mechanics need work, as his elbow flares out of place, his mid range jumper is one of the best from all of college basketball. He gets to his spots easily, especially around screens, which helps him earn a label as a shot creator.
Alexander’s rim finishing is concerning for teams regarding Alexander as a scorer. He doesn’t get much consistent lift on drives, which stems from limited athleticism, and he needs to add strength to negate this and allow for him to finish through tougher contact. In order to neutralize his lack of athletic finishing (his finishing is heavily rooted in acrobatic drives and finishes), adding strength will make it easier for him to win through contact on plays defenders have an athletic advantage on. Alexander’s touch is good with both hands, often finishing through tougher shots than the average prospect, and with more creativity to win rim attempts.
Alexander has all the tools offensively to be a capable and ideal rotation guard in the NBA, with upside to play meaningful minutes alongside a more true point guard. However, actualizing that and finding consistent ways to win over defenses with more variety will be necessary to take that jump. He is good at a lot of different things, but still needs to prove shooting consistency from 3 and at the rim to unlock his offensive potential. Defensively, his screen navigation and overall footwork plus strength development will determine how impactful he can be.
Projected draft range: 30-undrafted
Expected role: Shot creating combo guard with two-way upside to mold into an ideal guard off the bench.
Unplayable if: Not being a true point guard hurts his impact, and his jumper doesn’t become consistent
Exceeds expectations if: Jump shot mechanics improve, and his FT% correctly predicts shooting success down the road. Additionally, if his finishing improves and he becomes a legitimate 3 level scorer, he has a surefire roster spot.
