Pros:
High shooting upside; both a movement and spot-up shooter and can shoot off the dribble a bit
Clean shooting form; can easily shoot over contests
Comfortable taking what the defense gives him; will go left if defenses force him left
Good touch at the rim with both hands
Good motor; helps him win rebounds and keep plays alive
Cons:
Left hand still needs more consistency; left handed layups can be out of control
Can be prone to poor shot selection; his age shows at times on the court
Can be manipulated easily to be taken out of plays defensively; how realistic is his defensive upside swing?
Throws interceptable one handed passes; needs more fundamental passes
Needs to get stronger to avoid getting bumped off his spot defensively
Somewhat tunnel vision on drives; needs to get better at recognizing where the help is coming from to find open teammates
Negative assist:turnover ratio, largely in part due to poor passing accuracy and a loose handle that makes it easy to strip him. This may cause feel concerns
Doesn’t have great burst/lacks a strong first step
Short arms relative to his body
Swing Skills:
Average athleticism; how will it help him translate his high finishing percentages?
Are his defensive limitations fixable with age?
Summary:
Pacome Dadiet is a long-term prospect with high shooting upside, and potential to be a well-rounded scorer. As one of the select players turning 19 after the draft, he is perceived as an upside play away from the lottery. However, he must improve some questions about defense, feel for the game, and playmaking.
As a shooter, Dadiet has great touch, consistent follow-through, and he can quickly spot up to be a versatile movement shooter with size. With a quick shot that wastes no time going from catch and loading up to releasing, Dadiet can easily shoot over defenders, easily punishing late rotations. In Germany, he primarily played in the corner, which will be his role early in the NBA. As he matures, he ideally gets more freedom to create off the catch in more volume, which will help him inch towards his ceiling as a scorer.
A key element in realizing his upside as a scorer is continuing to grow as a shooter off the dribble. At times, usually in less impactful minutes, Dadiet was able to create for himself as a shooter, which seems projectable to both the mid range and 3 point line. Dadiet also can create advantageous scoring opportunities coming off screens, allowing for him to create for himself in limited time, which is a key trait for high-level off-ball players.
The concerns with Dadiet that make him a long term prospect are that, while 18 in a good pro league, he is mistake-prone with a negative assist/turnover ratio and he doesn’t show great off-ball defense, which creates a perfect storm of feel for the game question marks. While part of the negative assist/turnover ratio involves poor pass accuracy, stemming from risky passes and can be improved, the bigger picture is that he can be too reckless with the ball by trying dangerous moves in traffic or force bad plays and miss the right plays. Defensively, the trait that raises concerns with scouts is his off-ball defense, and how he often doesn’t play proactively, and doesn’t play reactive defense too well either. Although his direct mistakes are limited on both ends, he needs to take calculated risks to help his teammates indirectly more often to stand out as he matures.
Look for Dadiet to be one of the top upside plays among international players in the draft, having great size at just about 6’8 and a great shot, with room to grow as a defender and as a playmaker.
Projected draft range: 18-35
Expected role: Shooter with 3 level scoring upside.
Unplayable if: Feel for the game never improves, and avoidable mistakes don’t steadily decline.
Exceeds expectations if: Shooting translates at the highest level, and the right coaching staff unlocks his defensive upside.
